French bronze figure 'Elephant du Senegal' by Louis Barye

A superb late 19th century French bronze figure entitled 'Elephant du Senegal' by Louis Barye - the bronze figureof a running elephant with excellent deep brown, lightly rubbed patination and extremely fine hand chased surface de3tail on a naturalistic base, signed 'Barye', inscribed F. Babedienne Fondeur with the @FB' gold seal for exceptional quality.

Antione L Barye – French, 1796 to 1875, born in Paris he turned to sculpture in 1817 after his discharge from the army and worked in the studios of Bosio and Gros. In 1819 he took part in the competition of the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he was runner up. Barye exhibited at the salon from 1827 onwards. In a career spanning half a century he had a prodigious output of bronzes imbued with realism and naturalism, and a meticulous attention to anatomical detail.
