Early 19th Century Yellow Japanned Workbox
Circa 1825
A rare and exceptional early 19th century yellow Japanned, chinoisery decorated workbox, the hinged top beatifully decorated with an oriental 'Tuhau' or dignitary seated at a temple with two servants. The front is similary decorated with further oriental figures, whilst the sides have designs of temples, and on the back, a floral display. Raised on four gilt ball feet with appear to be original.
Inside the lid is a fully fitted interior with various comartments, some with lids, all lined in a fine pink silk fabric. The doors at the front enclose a cream coloured interior, decorated with further temples to the insides of the doors and flowers to the drawer fronts, which also retain the original handles and are lined with pink sugar paper to match the silk.
In excellent condition for the age with bright colours complete decoration without major areas of damage and only minor wear and tear as would be expected.
